Keynote Speaker

The 2014 NUMS will feature a keynote address by Prof. Patrick De LeenHeer. He will speak on "From fisheries to modeling the dead."

Abstract:

We will discuss two models of quite different biological systems.

In the first we model Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), regions where fishing is restricted or prohibited to protect overharvested species or their habitats. We consider the case of a predator-prey populations and investigate how the mobility of either predator or prey affects the efficiency of the MPA. In the second we present a model for the dynamics of fossils in the ground. The goal here is to explain the density distribution of fossil bones in various layers in the ground.
